German Chancellor Angela Merkel is known for her ideologies of liberalism. However, when Germany’s Parliament legalised same-sex marriage on Friday (June 30), the move did not get Merkel's vote.

Merkel has voted against the move and the justification she gave for the step was quite orthodox. “For me, marriage in the Basic Law is a marriage between a man and a woman and that is why I did not vote in favour of this bill today,” Merkel said after the amendment to legalise the same-sex marriage was passed in the parliament, The Independent reported.

Though she stood against same-sex marriage, it was passed overwhelmingly with 393 votes against 226.

Since Germany’s Parliament approved the amendment, according to Merkel, the new law will increase social cohesion and hopefully Germany will step into a better gender diverse system.

“I hope that the vote today not only promotes respect between different opinions but also brings more social cohesion and peace,” she stated despite her opposition.

For those of you who are unaware of Merkel’s good deeds, she opened doors to over 1 million refugees, stood steely while abandoning nuclear energy over safety fears and has been a protester against President Trump’s terms of respecting human rights.

The bill now awaits approval from the upper house next week. With this move, homosexual couples in Germany will now hold the same rights as heterosexual couples. They will also be empowered with full marital rights and permission to adopt children, for the first time in the country.
