The Israel-Hamas conflict has taken a distressing turn with the recent release of a video by Hamas claiming to show three women captured during their October 7 attack inside Israel.

This video has sparked international outrage and condemnation, with Israel's Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, labelling it as "cruel psychological propaganda."

On October 31, 2023, Hamas released a video that purportedly shows three women who were captured during their attack inside Israel. The footage is both chilling and unsettling, as one of the women, under apparent duress, delivers a brief statement in which she criticises Israel's response to the hostage crisis.

Looking back on the hostage crisis, which began on October 7 when Hamas militants infiltrated southern Israel, causing widespread panic and chaos, This violent act resulted in the abduction of approximately 200 people, including troops and citizens of different ages. Families are in distress as a consequence of the situation, and governments are scrambling for solutions.

One of the captives, identified as Daniel Aloni, addresses the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. She begins with a plea that exposes the deep frustration and fear experienced by those trapped in this precarious situation: "You promised to free us all. Instead, we bear your political and military failure."

She refers to a "mistake" made by Israel's government officials on October 7 but does not clarify. Her message, probably delivered under pressure, concludes with a question directed at the Israeli government: "Do you want to kill us all with an army?"

The video's release also coincides with Hamas's suggestion of a prisoner swap, wherein the release of the hostages is tied to the freedom of approximately 6,000 Hamas members held in Israeli prisons. "Release their prisoners. Set us all free. Let us return to our families!" Aloni cries out, her voice filled with desperation.

Israel's Response

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wasted no time in responding to this disturbing video. He labelled it "cruel psychological propaganda" and went as far as likening Hamas to the Islamic State group in comments released by his office soon after the video's publication. He identified the three women as Yelena Trupanob, Daniel Aloni, and Rimon Kirsht and vowed to "bring all the abducted and missing people home."

This hostage crisis unfolds as Israeli troops and tanks push deeper into Gaza, advancing on two sides of the territory's main city. The United Nations and medical staff have issued grave warnings that airstrikes are dangerously close to hospitals where tens of thousands of Palestinians have sought shelter.

Trupanova, who appears alongside Aloni in the video, is also believed to have been abducted from Kibbutz Nir Oz. The third woman, Kirsht, is thought to have been abducted from Kibbutz Nirim. To date, Hamas has released only four of the hostages, two Israeli women and two US-Israeli nationals, citing humanitarian grounds for their release.

The Israel-Hamas War has, time and again, thrust itself into the global spotlight, and this recent hostage video only adds to the complexity of the situation. While the true identity of the women remains uncertain and their fate hangs in the balance, one thing is clear: this conflict shows no signs of abating.
