Barkha Shukla who was a former chief of the Delhi Commission for Women and a member of the Congress party was expelled from her party on Friday by the disciplinary committee for "undertaking anti-party activities just before the MCD elections". She has been banned from the party for six years.
It is reported that she called Rahul Gandhi "mentally unfit" for leadership. She said, "Senior-most leaders of the party, I would not like to name anybody, are also of the view that Rahul Gandhi is mentally unfit to lead the party but choose not to say it because of reasons that are unknown to me."
She claimed that her party members even asked her to drop the issue of triple talaq (for which she had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi), or else she would be expelled from the party.
The former Congress’ Delhi women wing chief, pointed to the nepotism in the congress party and alleged that Rahul Gandhi and Ajay Maken only use the issue of women empowerment to gains votes. She alleged that her complaint against the misbehaviour by Delhi Congress Chief Ajay Maken fell on deaf ears. Singh showed her disappointment with that party and resigned from the post on Thursday.
In a development on the eve of civic polls in New Delhi, it was announced that Barkha Singh has now joined the BJP, after her meeting with the BJP’s Vice-President and Delhi in-charge Shyam Jaju. Singh had earlier said she will not join any party.
Ms Singh told reporters, “I have joined the BJP neither to fight elections nor am I aiming for any position, but to work hard for assignments I will be given,” as per a report in The Hindu.
