The Forbes list of Asia's Power Businesswomen 2022 ranked 20 female entrepreneurs from the continent who have shown remarkable leadership skills and made way for important business developments. 56-years-old Soma Mondal was recognised for her efforts in increasing the annual revenue of SAIL by 50 percent and reportedly bringing it to Rs. 1.03 lakh crores after assuming the position of the Chairperson. Who Is Soma Mondal?
Born and brought up in a middle-class family in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, Soma Mondal's father worked as an agricultural economist. In 1984, she completed her graduation in Electrical Engineering from the prestigious National Institute of Technology, Rourkela and started her career at National Aluminium Company (NALCO) as a Graduate Engineer Trainee. With her hard work and skills, she rose in her career to become the Commercial Director of NALCO in 2014.
Soma Mondal joined SAIL as Commercial Director in 2017 and worked extensively for the development of company's revenues and performance. She contributed majorly in the launching new brands like NEX, promotion of PF Structural Sections, Gaon Ki Ore initiative to utilise the potential of rural India, improving the sales in retail channels and successfully overcoming the challenges faced during Covid-19. She became SAIL's first female Functional Director and in 2021, she became the first woman in history to assume the position of Chairperson in the firm.
With her efforts, SAIL achieved the goal of its best ever sales volume in financial year 2017-18, a goal which is being achieved in every consecutive financial year since then. Aside from this, Soma Mondal is also a part of CII-National Committee on Steel. She also chairs the sub-committee of CII on 'Safeguard for Tariff and Non-Tariff Barrier'.
The Forbes list named three Indian women as top businesswomen of 2022. The other two female entrepreneurs were Namita Thapar, the executive director of Emcure Pharma, and Ghazal Alagh, the co-founder of Mamaearth.
