Footballer Kylian Mbappe was recently accused of rape during his trip to Stockholm, according to Swedish media. The local newspaper Aftonbladet reported that the 25-year-old French athlete allegedly forced himself upon a woman at the Bank Hotel, where he and his friends had stayed a night. Mbappe has denied all allegations, calling it 'fake news'. Here are key details about the developing case.
Mbappe's Private Party
Aftonbladet, a Swedish daily tabloid, reported that Kylian Mbappe and his friends spent about 48 hours in Stockholm, exploring different nightclubs and restaurants. On October 10, they reportedly booked a private ping pong room at the nightclub 'V'. Reports say that they spent at least half a million krona on the party and invited about 30 people, mostly women.
The event followed strict privacy protocols, with a ban on filming. The guests were allegedly asked to put their phones into envelopes and hand them over to the nightclub staff. An influencer, Julia Franzen, 34, was reportedly one of the attendees. She told the Swedish paper Expressen that such secret parties only allow women who "look good and have a nice personality."
Rape Suspicion Erupts
According to Aftonbladet, Mbappe took a woman from the party to the Bank Hotel that night. He then flew back home on a private jet the next afternoon. The next day, the hotel was surrounded by police. Aftonbladet reportedly accessed the investigators' documents, which showed that they were probing a rape case that happened in the same hotel room where Mbappe stayed.
The alleged survivor reportedly sought medical help at a hospital ward for rape victims, according to TV4. On October 15, the Stockholm prosecutor's office confirmed in a press release that a rape complaint had been registered. However, it must be noted that the speculations have not yet been confirmed. Meanwhile, Mbappe has denied the allegations.
Mbappe Says He Had Consensual Sexual Encounter
The footballer denied the allegations of forcing himself upon the woman and deemed Aftonbladet reports "fake news". As per RMC Sport, he admitted to having a consensual sexual relationship with her and also shared texts they exchanged after their night together.
Mbappe linked the allegations to his financial dispute with his former club, Paris Saint-Germain. A hearing into the case was held on October 15. Meanwhile, his entourage believes that he is being wrongfully targeted and will keep all his explanations for the courts if forced to appear in front of a judge.
Real Madrid Defends Mbappe
La Liga club Real Madrid have given their support to Mbappe, who was in Stockholm on holiday while recovering from an injury. While the team has not publically issued a statement, an internal source told Agence France-Presse that the reigning European champions were not overly concerned about the rape speculations, at least for now. The French player joined Real Madrid in July 2024.
Legal Battle Starts; Mbappe To File For Libel
Amid Mbappe's legal disputes with his former team, PSG, a new case has been opened in light of the rape accusations. A Swedish prosecutor has only confirmed that an investigation has been opened, without explicitly naming the footballer. Mbappe's lawyer Marie-Alix Canu-Bernard told AFP on October 15 that the 2018 World Cup winner was "at ease" because "he has done nothing wrong." The defendant added, "This is why we are going to file a complaint for libel."
