The AFP stated on June 23 that the Delta variant of the virus, which was first recorded in India and was termed a 'variant of global concern', will account for up to 90% of the new cases in the UK by the month of August this year.
Delta Plus Variant of Novel Coronavirus
The Delta plus variant, which is a new strain of the Delta variant of COVID-19, has been detected in three Indian states – Maharastra, Madhya Pradesh, and Kerala as of now.
This latest variant has also been traced out of India, including the UK, Japan, USA, Switzerland, Portugal, China, Poland, Russia and Nepal, making a total of ten countries.
While the country was celebrating the fall in the number of COVID-19 cases for about the past 15 days, where less than fifty thousand new cases were reported on June 22, the emerging new variant of the virus has become a cause of worry. The Delta and Delta plus variant might cause serious harm in the coming days, according to reports.
Meanwhile, the much-awaited Pfizer vaccine is in the final stage of getting approval for its COVID-19 vaccine in India. Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said at the USA-India Chamber of Commerce Annual Summit that over two billion doses of the said vaccine will be sent to India, post-approval, out of which one billion doses will be sent this year itself.
