The India Navy's first all-woman crew comprised sailboat, eyeing to traverse global circumnavigation was flagged-off on Saturday at a ceremony in Goa. This is Navy's second vessel Tarini, with an all- woman crew, sailed at the INS Mandovi Boat Pool.

With this induction in place, Indian women made a bit of maritime history once again and the whole ceremony was celebrated in presence of Admiral Sunil Lamba, Chief of Naval Staff along with other senior naval officers.

"The sailboat Tarini is being inducted into the Navy and is slated to be the platform for First Indian All-Women Circumnavigation of the globe expedition of the Indian Navy," a navy statement said.

Aim to complete a historic open ocean voyage, Tarini's all-woman crew is set to sail in August 2017. These women would face extremely challenging expedition, said Admiral Sunil Lanba. He also mentioned that in the history of the Indian Navy, the women crew earlier has been sailed over 10,000 Nautical miles on INSV Mhadei. What more? They aboard a voyage from Goa to Mauritius and back, which was completed in 20 days. Had a trip from Goa to Cape Town, a journey that was not an easy one. While they ran into some rough weather, sailed through during the monsoon seas and heavy winds, naval officials are proud of their achievements and applauded for the courage shown so far.

"Indian Navy is attempting to revitalise open ocean sailing and will also be inducting four 40 feet, state-of-the -art open ocean racing sailboats," the statement added.

This highly trained women’s crew is solidly comprised of skipper Lieutenant Commander Vartika Joshi and crew members include Lieutenant Commander Pratibha Jamwal, Lieutenant Aishwarya Boddapati, Lieutenant Patarapalli Swathi, Lieutenant Sh Vijaya Devi and Lieutenant Payal Gupta.
After the INSV Mhadei operation, the features of the boat have been updated by the dignitaries based on the feedback from the earlier experience. After Saturday’s ceremony, the crew sailed the boat out of harbour and took a detour to quickly check its capabilities. Started to be made on 27 March 2016 at the Aquarius Shipyard, the vessel was constructed by the Warship Overseeing Team, Goa. And, all the trials of the newly-built vessel were successfully completed in January.
The women are united by the sole passion for sailing. We wish the crew good luck in all of their future endeavors. Three cheers for the ladies!
