Police officers deliver baby on street: In the Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu a rare event unfolded when a group of female police officers came together to help a woman deliver her baby girl on the street in Kumbakonam on Sunday.
As per reports, the woman who gave birth is mentally ill. A constable, Suguna of the Kumbakonam west police station was walking near the Potramarai tank on Sunday when she saw the woman, who is reportedly in her 30s, struggling with pain. That is when Suguna alerted other police officers in the area to come and help.
Inspector Baby of the Kumbakonam west police station received the call first. She said, "I received a call from Suguna and we reached the spot. Since the woman was wearing a big nightgown, we did not immediately realise she was pregnant. There was blood loss and we immediately called the ambulance. I told my station officers to get sarees and towels, and we surrounded the woman."

As per the police inspector, daily-wage women workers of the neighbourhood also stepped in to help. They provided water and clean area for the delivery procedure. After the baby was born, the police officials admitted the mother and the new born to the government hospital in the area.
Thanjavur's Deputy Inspector General of Police reportedly congratulated the team of women police officials who saved two lives on Sunday. The constable who first spotted the woman, Suguna, Inspector Baby and another constable Saritha have been given certificates for taking swift action for the woman even though the incident did not take place under their jurisdiction.
Since the woman is mentally ill, the police could not get her to give them more information. As per reports, the police have now arrested a daily-wage worker named John, who is 45-years-old, for allegedly impregnating a mentally challenged woman.
