What is the cost of being a girl in India? Her life. In a heart-wrenching case, a man strangulated his 3-year-old daughter in Jharkhand's Dhanbad district. Her only mistake was that she was born as a girl.
According to NDTV, the fear that his wife who was pregnant again would give birth to a girl compelled Shankar Ray, a farmer, to take this extreme step.
The girl's relatives informed the police authorities as soon as they got to know about the murder. Nirsa police station in-charge Parmeswer Prasad reached the village and recovered the minor's body. It was sent for postmortem to the Patliputra Medical College Hospital (PMCH), Dhanbad.

The child was at her maternal grandmother's place when the incident took place. The father was also staying there. At night, he cajoled her to sleep next to him in the courtyard. In the morning, he killed her by strangulating her while she was asleep.
Shankar's wife Jyotsna, who was skeptical of his intentions since the beginning, told NDTV, "Right from the day of her birth, he has been trying to kill her. For the safety of the girl, I deserted my in-law's house and have been living with my younger brother for the last three years as both my parents have passed away.".
The police have been sent to Dhanbad district to arrest the father.
The couple had tied the knot in 2011 but the birth of the baby girl had become a bone of contention between the two.
According to a report by HT, if nothing is done to elevate the current state of the girl child, the sex ratio will dip from from 939 women to 1,000 men in 2011 to 898 by 2031. This could have serious social and economic repercussions.
Indians with such archaic mindsets must understand that gender of a person cannot determine his or her potential.
