CBSE Topper Gangrape Case: Haryana fast-track court convicted three accused persons on Thursday and acquitted five others in a 2018 case. The sentence to accused will be pronounced on Friday, reports say.
As per reports, on September 12, 2018, an 18-year-old girl who had topped the CBSE exams was on her way to coaching when she was abducted and raped in the Mahendragarh district. The police had filed a chargesheet against eight persons including three main accused persons Manish, Nishu Phogat and Pankaj. Manjit, Dr Sanjeev and Abhishek were booked under other charges.
The additional district and sessions judge Mona Singh heard the arguments from both sides and convicted the main accused persons on Thursday. They were reportedly booked under sections of rape, kidnapping and forcibly administering intoxicating substances of the Indian Penal Code. Five other accused booked under different charges were acquitted by the court.
The case had grabbed headlines in 2018 the police had named an ex-army man as the accused. The survivor was a state-level kabaddi player and hailed from a village in Rewari district. She was taken to a field by the main accused persons where other accomplishes joined them.
In her statement, the survivor had said that the ex-army man Pankaj and Manish who were residents of her village met her near the Koshi bus stand in Mahendragarh district when she was going to her coaching. They offered her a glass of water after drinking which the survivor fell unconscious. The accused then took her in a car to a well near a field and gave her another drink. The girl told the police that she was raped after that.
After filing the complaint, the accused were arrested by the police four later. The survivor had alleged that the five other accused out on bail used to send threats to her family. A senior police official part of the investigating team reportedly said that 23 people's statement was taken in the case.
