Eminent Hindustani as well as Carnatic music vocalist Shyamala G Bhave passed away on Friday, May 22 at her residence, after suffering from a stroke. She was 79. A statement issued by the family members said, “She was ailing for quite some time. Three days ago, she was discharged from the hospital. Her condition worsened after that. She passed away this morning at 7:15 am after suffering a stroke”. Her younger sister Nirmala, was present right beside her when the end came, the family members added.

She used to run one of the oldest music schools, the Saraswati Sangeet Vidyalaya which was founded by her father in 1930. Her father, late Govind Vitthal Bhave was the one who trained her in Hindustani music. While she was educated in the Carnatic stream by noted vocalists A Subbaraya and B Doreswamy.

Shyamala Bhave attained the first position in a music competition when she was six. She also started giving music performances when she turned 12.
Her legacy
Belonging from a family of artists and musicians, Shyamala was a child prodigy. Shyamala was a woman of many talents, she composed and performed in six languages as well as was trained in Hindustani and Carnatic forms of music, which is a rare achievement for any musician. She has also performed for erstwhile Indian President Dr. Rajendra Prasad at the age of twelve. Although now she is gone but has left her legacy and world will remember her for the great artist and musician she was.
