She has successfully replaced Liz Cheney for the position. She said that she was truly "honoured and humbled" for gaining the support of her fellow Republicans.

"I know we are all here to serve the people, the voters who place their trust and faith in us. You have put yours in me to serve this Conference and I will never lose sight of that. I will always work my very hardest to earn your trust every day," said Elise Stefanik.

Elise Stefanik is an ardent Trump loyalist

Elise Stefanik's appointment to the post comes two days after Liz Cheney was ousted from the GOP chair post. This comes after Cheney became Donald Trump's vocal critic, and had voted to impeach him.

She has rebuked Trump over the Capitol Hill riots, and also criticised him for making false claims about the election results. However, she remains defiant in her resolve to work to defeat him, if he tries to return to the White House in 2024.

Stefanik defeated Cheney 134-46 in a secret ballot vote. With Elise Stefanik's win, the Republican party now hopes on regaining control over Congress in 2022. She said that she is confident that the party will win the majority next year.

Stefanik is an ardent Trump loyalist, who had always given voice to his false claims, regarding the recent US election "fraud." Her election to the post comes at a time when many anti-Trump Republicans are trying to pull the party away from him. However, Stefanik has clearly stated that Trump is an important leader of the Republican party and that he is a leader people look up to.

Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump congratulated Stefanik for winning the party's No. 3 leadership position.
