In a tragic incident that took place on August 13, in Tardeo, South Mumbai, a 70-year-old woman lost her life and her husband sustained injuries during a home robbery.
The elderly couple, identified as Surekha Agarwal and Madan Mohan Agarwal, both in their 70s and residing alone in their flat within the Yusuf Manzil building, fell victim to the ruthless actions of the three robbers.
The incident
At around 6 am in the morning, the elderly couple was preparing for their routine morning walk when three robbers forcefully entered their residence. Swiftly overtaking them, the criminals proceeded to tape the mouths of the victims and bind their hands and legs. In a harrowing turn of events, the robbers made off with a substantial haul, which included valuable gold ornaments, watches, and cash.
Once the assailants fled the scene, Madan Mohan Agarwal, sustaining serious injuries yet showing courage, managed to make his way to the flat's entrance and activated the alarm. Responding promptly, a member of the housing society came to their aid. Tragically, however, Surekha Agarwal was found unconscious, and despite immediate efforts, she was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
The senior couple resided independently on the building's third floor, while their children – two sons and a daughter – occupied a residence in a neighbouring locality.
Police Investigation Underway
The Tardeo police have taken swift action in response to this shocking crime, registering a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including Sections 302 (murder) and 394 (voluntarily causing hurt), among others.
An ongoing investigation aims to shed light on the circumstances surrounding this incident, as the community grapples with the loss of life and the brutality that has shaken their sense of security. The CCTV footage from the shops located beneath Yoosuf Manzil has been gathered to accelerate the progress of the investigation.
