Sonja Semyona, a 45-year-old self-intimacy coach who calls herself an "erotic alchemist," has come out as an ecosexual and talked about her 'erotic' relationship with an Oak tree, explaining what ecosexuality means.
The woman took her love for nature to extremes when she got smitten by an oak tree. She stated that the romantic energy she felt with the tree was something she has always sought in a partner. However, she clarified she does not indulge in any physical intimacy with nature. Let us know more about this unique relationship.
An Ecosexual Woman's Relationship With An Oak Tree
Ecosexualism can be a radical form of environmental activism based on natural fetishism and the idea of the earth as a lover, but to explain in a more specific sense, ecosexual is defined as a person who perceives nature in "romantic, sensual and sexy" manner.
The self-proclaimed ecosexual woman, Sonja Semyona (45) stated that she finds eroticism in something so big holding her back, she further explained that "the feeling of being tiny and supported by something so solid. The feeling of not being able to fall."
The tree-hugger woman took us through her journey of finding her ecosexuality during the times of Covid-19 pandemic lockdown in 2020 when she relocated to Canada's Vancouver Island and used to go for regular strolls during the lockdown when she found herself walking around an old oak tree five times a week during winters.
Narrating her story of finding a true connection with the tree in talk, the nature lover shared how she observed a connection building inside her with the tree and she would lie against the tree. She explained, "There was an eroticism something so big and so old holding my back."
Sonja shared how she was looking for a person to find such a connection but stated that is just a fantasy with a person as she instead ended up finding a tree she felt the "rush of erotic energy" that she craved stating it was similar to the erotic energy we feel meeting a new partner and states that is not sustainable.
Sonja addressed that it may sound strange to be in love with another life form, however despite feeling an "erotic energy" with a tree, she clarified she does not engage in any physical intimacy act with the tree.
The oak tree lover explains that there is a misconception around ecosexuality only meaning there is sex between a person and nature, however, she noted it as a "different way to explore the erotic" but explains for her the erotic act is to watch the changing season as she talks about how trees go from death in winter to everything coming alive in springs as they mate.
Sonja noted that there is a similarity between the sex between two people and the eroticism people feel but remarked how they do not necessarily have to be the same.
Is Ecosexuality Present In A Lot Of People?
The ecosexual also claimed that ecosexuality is already present in a lot of people that they fail to recognise as she underscores that there is a reason people like to go to picnics in parks and hike amidst nature and states that we fail to notice that the reason behind people going towards nature is the wish to "tap into the life force that comes from these things" stating it to be erotic.
Sonja also believes that people can gain a lot by having a "symbiotic relationship" with nature and states reconnecting with nature might even help to address many climate issues.
We must note that interpretations of "ecosexual" emphasize a deep connection with nature. When discussing this topic, it's crucial to be respectful and avoid making insensitive or judgmental comments.
More and more people are becoming more open and comfortable about ecosexuality in the online space. Another creator recently came out as an ecosexual on Instagram. Ivy Bloom revealed that she has been dating a tree for 2 weeks now. She further said, "I've been a little bit shy about posting this for the whole world to see, but speaking to my therapist has made me feel more comfortable about it. It’s an unconventional relationship, but I hope I can inspire other people to get out of their shells and try new things."
Who Are Ecosexuals? Beyond Myths
Ecosexuality is a growing movement where people explore a deep, intimate connection with the natural world, finding emotional and even erotic satisfaction in their relationships with nature. Semyonova was initially searching for a fulfilling human relationship but found herself drawn to the comfort and grounding she experienced with the tree. "The feeling of being tiny and supported by something so solid," she explains, emphasises the stability and depth she finds in nature, which, to her, fulfills a longing for connection that goes beyond physical interactions.
Semyonova dispels a common misconception about ecosexuality, clarifying that it is not about engaging in physical acts with nature. Instead, ecosexuals experience an erotic resonance with the natural world that connects them to life’s cyclical rhythms. Watching the seasons change, for example, becomes a sensual act: "To watch the changing of the seasons is to me an erotic act," she explains on Unilad, highlighting how the transformations in nature parallel human intimacy.
She believes that ecosexuality is “already present in a lot of people” who feel a desire to spend time outdoors, and by recognising this connection, she then explains that people could develop a symbiotic relationship with nature that fosters both personal fulfilment and environmental stewardship. For Semyonova, this perspective on nature could even offer insights for addressing the climate crisis, suggesting that an intimate connection with the earth could inspire people to care for it more deeply.
