Even When Drunk, Women Has Ability To Spot Narcissists and Psychopaths, Study

Usually, alcohol can get you carried away, and under the influence of it one can do anything, also make you lose your consciousness and end up in bad company, this is what it is assumed. However, research proves it wrong. According to research, a woman can still spot narcissists, psychopaths, and devious people, even when drunk. 

So basically booze cannot be blamed for everything that goes wrong. A research team at the University of Liverpool led by Dr. Gayle Brewer conducted a study on the influence of alcohol on mate choice and perceptions of danger in dark triad faces, how women view men with the dark triad of personality traits (narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy). The findings also concluded that- Alcohol does not influence the selection of short-term partners with dark triad traits.

Drunk Women Can Spot Narcissists, Says Study

The study titled- A drunk heart speaks a sober mind finds out that booze doesn’t degrade a woman's ability to spot a jerk or narcissistic asshole, even after the researcher fed them vodka and lemonade.

The study also touches on previous studies which talk about women preferring high-dark triad men, especially in short-term relationships but tend to dislike the faces of men with high levels of dark triad traits. The current study is built on previous studies, Brewer’s research team examine 96 women aged 18-26. These women were shown photographs of men whose faces were manipulated to demonstrate high levels of dark triad traits. The researchers used morphing technology to approximate these characteristics. Brewer explained, "We’d take the face of someone with a high level of psychopathy, for example, we’d morph that onto a control face. So you’d morph the psychopathy face onto my photograph."

The research team found that women dislike the faces of men who score highly on dark triad traits. Women even after drinking alcohol could perceive and negatively respond to dark triad faces. Brewer also confirmed- people when seeing such faces, feel less attractive and more threatened. 

Further, Brewer speculated that the unconscious ability to sense dark triad traits confers women an evolutionary advantage. Due to this advantage women might be able to sense people with a negative vibe or more threatening, and less likely to be trusted. It also hints that psychological or physical safety is at risk. 

Brewer also explains that she would like to test this hypothesis on women having poor past relationship experiences. 

If that is the case then one cannot blame alcohol for landing in the problem. It is not the alcohol but poor judgment of character that makes you decide on ending up with a narcissist jerk or psychopath.
