In February, the world’s heaviest woman, 36-year-old Egyptian Eman Ahmed, had flown down to India for a weight-loss surgery. Now her family has alleged that her surgeon Dr Muffazal Lakdawala and the hospital who treated her are liars and that she has not lost as much weight as they are claiming. They are also saying that the doctors have put Eman on “massive medication to stop her brain activity”.
Eman’s surgery was made possible because Saifee hospital collected donations from around the world. Her travel and treatment cost more than Rs 2 crore.
In a video that has gone viral, Eman's sister Shaimaa claims that Eman is very sick and is being fed through a feeding tube. She says that Eman cannot talk or move. The doctors who had weighed her after the treatment said she had reduced her weight to 171 kg from 500 kg. But Shaimaa claims that Eman has not lost as much weight as her doctors had claimed.
She is protesting Eman’s discharge from Saifee, claiming that she is too sick to be taken back to Egypt.
In retaliation, Lakdawala is claiming that Shaimaa doesn’t want to take her sister back to Egypt because of financial reasons.
“Eman will not die due to obesity, we have treated that part. She needs neurological rehabilitation that can be done in Egypt. But despite counselling, her sister has decided to defame us because she is not financially capable of treating Eman in Egypt,” said Lakadawala
He says that they have treated her for obesity in the best possible way, but that she suffers from other ailments that are beyond his expertise. The hospital will also do a CT scan to determine her neurological condition.
"It’s my worst nightmare. Not a single hospital or doctor was ready to treat Eman and now when she has lost so much weight, the family is raising questions on a consolidated humanitarian effort, which has saved her life,” said Dr Lakdawalla.
“The hospital is not equipped to handle such a case. She (Eman) didn't lose 240 or 260 kg. She is really helpless to leave this place," said Shaimaa
Now one of the key doctors, Dr Aparna Govil Bhaskar, has withdrawn from treating Eman. She announced her decision in a Facebook post. "We put our heart and soul into her care,” she says. “We fell in love with Eman.”
“Unfortunately Eman's case is an example of the worst kind of assault that a patient's family can do to a doctor. What her sister has done is worse than physically assaulting a doctor. She has broken the bond of trust between doctors and patients. I am appalled at the irony that today when Eman’s health is the best that it has ever been in the last 25 years, her sister chooses to go down this path," she wrote.
On April 22, the hospital had released photos of a 'smiling Eman' siting in a wheelchair. This was something that would have been impossible for her to do before the surgery, they claimed.
Her sister released the defamatory video on April 24.
