A Guwahati-based doctor couple was arrested on Friday, May 5, for holding 3-year-old twin sisters captive at their home and abusing them over several months. The doctors were identified as Dr Waliul Islam, a surgeon, and Dr Sangeeta Datta, a psychiatrist.
They have been sent to police custody along with their domestic help. The three of them have been charged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
Doctor Couple Abuse Twin Children
Upon medical examination, it was discovered that one of the twins has several injury marks on her body. Her private parts were burned with cigarettes. Diganta Barah, Commissioner of Police, Guwahati, said that the twin girls were held captive on the fourth floor of Roma Enclave, the doctor couple’s residence.
The doctor couple, along with their domestic help, Lakshmi Nath, were produced before the chief judicial magistrate’s court in Guwahati on Sunday. While the doctor couple were sent to five days of judicial custody, their maid was sent to seven days of custody.
The case is being investigated, and Assam’s Director General of Police (DGP) and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma are personally monitoring the developments of the case.
The couple had lied and claimed that they were the biological parents of the 3-year-old fraternal twins. Police officials are trying to locate the parents of the twins and find out how they got trapped by the doctor couple. The intention behind abusing the children has yet to be found.
Children’s rights activist Miguel Das Queah got suspicious that something was wrong with the accused couple’s house. This was after a few informants told Das that the couple would keep one of the twins tied to a pole on the terrace under the hot sun. The case was taken up by the police after one of the informants reported the incident.
It’s heartbreaking and spine-chilling to know that someone could abuse children so brutally. The fact that this couple were doctors by profession and the woman was a psychiatrist is alarming! One of the very few people to whom we are truly vulnerable are doctors, especially psychiatrists.
Incidents like this shake our faith in doctors. How can people who pursue a career to serve humanity have such a cruel side to them? How can we ever trust a doctor again, especially with our children? We’ve read novels and books about doctors leading sociopathic lives in the dark, but coming across such real-life incidents is terrifying!
