Announcing the sentence, the court said that Punjaban ‘crossed all limits’ to be called a woman. The court also asked her to pay a fine of Rs 64,000 to the survivor and said she "deserves severest punishment." Her accomplice in the heinous act, Sandeep Bedwal, was also sent to 20-year imprisonment for raping a minor girl. Delhi Police Crime Branch had arrested Sonu Punjaban in 2017.

“In India thousands of children are kidnapped every year. Very few of them are recovered. Minor girls are kidnapped on the pretext of marriage to be sold in flesh industry where they are sexually exploited on a daily basis. (This) is also one of those cases where a minor innocent girl was trapped in the name of love and kidnapped in a pre-planned manner to force her into flesh trade,” the judge said in his order, Hindustan Times reported.
