The police said that the body was found on Sunday morning, inside the park, which is located opposite the Nandnagri Bus Depot. The Delhi Commission for Women stated, in its notice to the police official, Harsh Vihar, that according to media reports, the woman could have been murdered after being sexually assaulted. DCW has even sought copies of the FIR and the post mortem reports.
Seeking a detailed action report, the Commission, in its notice to the police expressed their wishes to ascertain the cause of death of the woman and whether she was sexually assaulted before being murdered. They termed the case as “extremely serious” and also asked the police about the steps being taken to identify the woman, and whether or not they have been able to do it.
According to reports, Swati Maliwal, the Chief of The Delhi Commission for Women, said that it was a very unfortunate incident and that the safety of women in the capital is a matter of grave concern. “We are issuing notice to Delhi Police and seeking an report in the matter. Police must take urgent action and the accused must be arrested immediately”, she said.
The police had earlier said that the woman was a resident of Seemapuri in Delhi, and was a drug addict. According to an initial enquiry, she moved among people with criminal backgrounds and those involved in drug peddling. During a physical examination, apparent strangulation marks were found on her neck, and marks indicating cuts on her hands.
According to the police, primary physical examination has not found any signs of sexual assault. All CCTV cameras installed in and around the park are being screened to identify any suspicious activity, or the culprits, and to establish the sequence of events.
