Miranda House and Daulat Ram College, these two women’s colleges of Delhi University recently saw some horrible harassment incidents in public by some misogynist men. The acts were done by the generation that loves calling itself 'woke' and 'modern' but is way worst than the previous one.
Sexual harassment is a punishable offence in Indian Constitution but when it happens at Delhi University, it seems to be forgotten and forgiven somehow. Now, this might offend some people but it is the sad truth of all the times when women's safety was harmed, whether it was the 2020 Gargi College case or the DRC eve-teasing case in 2023.
Something that should scare society is that these acts of harassment are carried out by the younger generation of men, the generation that calls itself woke, the Gen Z who is here to rule and radicalise or should I say the generation who doesn't believe in the concept of consent and can't keep it in their pants.
Delhi University Harassment Case
This generation of offenders is so daring that they don't even care whether they are in public or some people will stop them or report them. They harass and cat-call women in public, in areas that are full of crowds and even security at times. However, no one tries to stop them from doing such. The video of DRC incidents shows school boys shouting, "Pappi do ya pappi lo" on top of their voices just outside the college premises and nobody from the public tried to stop their hideous act. That's shameful and worrying at the same time because how can we expect them to take action when such things happen in secluded areas?
The previous generation of offenders had the fear of the public, they did not harass women by shouting remarks in public places. Even the eve-teasers stood away from the women's college gates to avoid being caught by the security. This generation tries to climb the walls and gates of women's colleges in the presence of security, college authorities and even police, that's how fearlessly wrong this generation is. Forget about secluded places or dark roads, even college premises are not safe during the day in Delhi.
The authorities promise a lot but they hardly do anything. No identification of students happens even after videos of the incident go viral, no actions are taken even when the proof is there. What will this generation do in private or dark spaces? We have been working towards removing patriarchy while these youngsters have been violating women's security and rights and making their own set of assumptions about a woman's character, an example is the long train of viral reels on social media that 'label' a woman based on her behaviour.
This generation was expected to learn from the mistakes of its ancestors, realise the concept of equality and be more open to changes in the power dynamics and eradicating the toxic ideas of patriarchy for men as well as women. But such incidents make us realise that such a society is still a distant dream. Society needs to introspect about what they are teaching the boys and what they are doing once they are in public because this society doesn't want men who are a threat to women but the ones who want to break the cycle of oppression over the years.
