Delhi Toddler Mauled by Pit Bull: What Went Wrong?

A one-and-a-half-year-old girl is recovering from a horrific ordeal after being attacked by a pit bull in Delhi's Burari area on January 2nd. The unprovoked incident left the child with three broken bones in her leg, 18 stitches, and 17 days of hospitalisation.

According to reports, the toddler went out for a walk with her grandfather in Uttarakhand Colony when the untethered pit bull approached and attacked her. The child's screams alerted nearby residents, who rushed to her aid and managed to free her from the dog's jaws after a struggle. Around 7-8 people had to rush to rescue the girl.

The injured child was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where she underwent surgery for her leg fractures. She remained hospitalized for 17 days due to the severity of her injuries.

The girl's family alleged that when they approached Burari police station to inform the police about the incident that happened with the toddler, the cops refused to register the case despite them producing CCTV footage as evident proof. The family also shared that some of the police officers tried to pressurise them to compromise and settle the matter with the pet owner.

The girl's grandfather shared that no action had been taken against the pet parent till now, and the terror of the street dogs in their neighbourhood is so evident that they are afraid to step out of their houses as well, sharing how three members of their family have been bitten and attacked by the street dogs.

The girl's family demanded the authorities remove the pit bull from their neighborhood, while the police said they had been verifying the facts of the case before registering the case under relevant sections.

Similar Case Of 'Dog Terror' In Delhi:

A similar incident of a horrid dog attack took place on January 9 in Delhi's Rohini sector when a 7-year-old girl was attacked by an American Bull pet in her housing society while she was playing with her friends.

The child's father, Shrikant Bhagat, shared that the dog bit his daughter's hand, back, behind her ear, leg, and under her eyes, but fortunately, she fought back and screamed for help so that her family and others could intervene on time to save her life.

The girl's father also shared that the incident has caused the little girl trauma, and she couldn't sleep for three nights while society members protested a torch march not against the pet dogs but the pet owners' irresponsibility, which can lead to grave attacks and be a danger, especially to children and elderly people.

Ban On Dangerous Dog Breeds:

Several dog breeds, such as American Bull, Pitt Bull, and many others, have been banned from being kept as pets in India as they are considered "ferocious" and "dangerous.".

Last year, in December, the central government, after many filed petitions, informed the Delhi High Court that a decision on prohibiting licences for keeping "dangerous" dog breeds as pets would be made within three months.

It is important to note that not all pit bulls are aggressive, and responsible ownership can play a significant role in preventing attacks. However, the breed's history and potential for powerful bites highlight the importance of proper training, socialization, and responsible ownership practices.
