Police have arrested a 24-year-old man for allegedly uploading explicit photos and videos of his ex-girlfriend on social media to assassinate her character and force her family to get her married to him. The accused, identified as Kumar Avinash of Saket, had also posted the mobile numbers of both his ex-girlfriend and her mother on social media.
The woman had lodged a complaint with the police on June 6, alleging that she had been receiving calls and messages from unknown numbers since June 1. Later, she discovered that someone had created a fake profile on Instagram, Facebook, and other social media platforms using her details. Obscene photos and videos of the woman have also been posted on the social media handles.

Deputy Commissioner of Police of Shahdara, Rohit Meena stated that based on the woman’s complaint, the police analysed the technical data, traced the IP address of the fake IDs, and arrested the accused.
During police interrogation, Avinash revealed that he and the woman studied at the same college and were involved in a romantic relationship. However, the woman had broken up with him because her family didn’t approve of their relationship.
Wanting to continue his relationship with the woman, Avinash created a fake ID for her and uploaded her explicit photos and videos. He thought that this would defame the woman and force her family to get her married to him.
A laptop and two mobile phones that were used to commit the crime were confiscated from the accused. The police are carrying out further investigations into the case.
A lot of these incidents seem to go unreported because our society believes they’ll ruin the family's reputation. A 2010 cybercrime report also revealed that only 35% of women filed a complaint with the police. So, it’s welcoming that in this case, the woman‘s family has been supportive of her and has decided to take it up with the cops instead of finding ways to deal with it themselves or blaming and shaming the woman.
Revenge porn is a trending form of cybercrime where a person’s explicit images or videos are publicised on the internet without their consent by someone, most often their former partner, in order to embarrass or distress them. Only if society stops associating the honour of a woman and her family with her chastity and resorting to victim blaming will such crimes cease.
