Anchit Chawla, a 34-year-old man from Delhi was arrested by the police on 24 July on the charge of duping several women whom he met through matrimonial sites. The police said the women, some of whom are widows and divorcees, were looted on the pretext of a marriage.

The man reportedly masqueraded as a businessman and cheated lakhs of rupees from women. During investigations, it was brought to light that he was involved in four other similar cases. The police informed that earlier, he reportedly posed as a security chief of the Special Protection Group in PMO and looted Rs 15 lakh from a doctor by assuring him of a government job. Furthermore, he schemed many jewellers as well by acting as the personal security officer of a political leader, reported TOI.

The incident was brought to the police when a woman lodged a complaint at the Ashok Vihar Police Station. She claimed that a man by the name of Mudit Chawla conned her. The accused swindled her of Rs 17 lakhs over one year.
The man allegedly approached the complainant through a matrimonial site back in December 2018. She told the police that Chawla reportedly informed her of owning a bed sheet factory in Palam in southwest Delhi and rented luxury cars to tour and travel agencies.
They contacted through emails, calls and WhatsApp. He reportedly started demanding small sums of money from her and to gain her trust, used to repay her timely. Soon, he persuaded her to take personal loans from banks to help his business losses. The woman had reportedly given him Rs 17 lakh till December 2019. However, when she urged for a marriage, he began averting her.
Chawla had used several names and different profiles to dodge the police from arresting him.
Vijayanta Arya, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northwest) said that the police gathered intelligence and details from the matrimonial site based on the information provided by the woman. Finally, he was hunted from Palam Vihar Extension in Gurugram on Friday, 24 July, with aide from technical surveillance. Moreover, the police have reportedly annexed several items from his possession including a laptop, two mobile phones, car and Aadhaar cards.
