Social media gives respite to many people, from those who scroll every day to divert themselves from reality to those who seek independence and career through it. One such woman is 30-year-old Neetu, a domestic help whose ambitions were to become an influencer. But struck by abusive marriage and poverty, she ended up stealing her owner's jewellery to buy a DSLR to gain higher resolution Instagram and YouTube videos. The theft happened on July 15, just a few days after she joined. Neetu is now in police custody facing charges of theft.

As per the reports, Neetu originally belonged to Behrod in Rajasthan. Fed up with her drug-addicted husband who allegedly abused her, she came to Delhi to live her own life. She worked as domestic help at several houses and gradually gained an interest in social media. She used to upload many videos on her channels on both Instagram and YouTube.

However, someone advised her that DSLR would help her make better-resolution videos and hence push her career up. When Neetu checked out the price of a DSLR, she realised that she could never afford it.

When she joined her new owners in a bungalow in Dwarka, she saw the jewels and hope of uplifting her career. She joined a few days before July 15 and quickly gained the trust of the owners. She even provided a fake address and details to avoid any kind of suspicion and detection.

The owners complained about the theft

The crime came to the fore when the owner, Prashanth Rana, a resident of Dwaraka's Sector 12, reported the theft of two gold bangles, one silver chain and a pair of silver anklets with the anti-burglary cell of Dwarka district. She suspected Neetu behind the crime because she was the only outsider to visit the house on the day of burglary. Following a few investigations, Neetu was nabbed by the police when she was trying to evade the arrest and leave Delhi. She had her bags packed with jewellery worth lakhs.

Initially, Neetu denied committing the burglary. But later she admitted. A senior Police officer told TOI, “Neetu initially denied her involvement in the theft but later broke down. She admitted that her interest in social media drove her to commit the theft, aiming to fund the purchase of a DSLR camera worth lakhs for creating high-resolution content on her channels.”

Her failed attempts to evade the arrest

Since Neetu provided the wrong address proof, she wasn't traceable at the beginning of the investigation. Her mobile number was also switched off. But later after reviewing CCTV footage nearby and talking to the neighbours, police identified her location in Rajpuri Chowk.

As per the Deccan Chronicle, officers said that Neetu left the bungalow and the society in an autorickshaw which dropped her off at Dwarka's Sector 6 from where she took another autorickshaw to Rajpuri Chowk. All this effort was a plan to evade the arrest.

Since there was no camera at Rajpuri Chowk, the police traced the auto driver who dropped Neetu. The driver led the police to the location where he dropped her off. Neetu, hence, was arrested at her residence while packing bags to leave Delhi. Neetu, with an ambition of being a social media influencer and no prior criminal record, now is behind bars.
