The girl had gone to fetch cold water from the cremation ground on the evening of August 1 and she never came back. When the girl's mother went to look for her at the crematorium, the priest there told her that her daughter got electrocuted and died. The mother went on to claim that the accused coerced her into cremating the minor, saying that if her body was sent for post mortem, the doctors would remove her organs.
In the past 11 days since the alleged crime took place, the Delhi Police is yet to establish what really went down at the crematorium on August 1. Four accused persons including the priest were arrested. The police had said earlier that they were not able to get conclusive reports after the post-mortem.
The Delhi Police told the court on August 9 that they will need custodial interrogation in order to investigate the case. The accused persons were then sent to police custody for three days.
The incident sparked outrage in the national capital. Many individuals are still protesting outside the crematorium asking for justice for the minor girl. The Chief Minister of Delhi had visited the crematorium and had met the deceased girl's parents, he also announced an ex-gratia (compensation) of 10 lakh rupees for the girl's family.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had also visited the family and had posted a picture with them on his Twitter account. The picture was later taken down as it appeared to reveal the identity of a minor girl. Gandhi's Twitter account was also suspended.
