A patrolling police team found the newborn wrapped in a polythene bag that was covered with a cloth. The infant was admitted to the AIIMS Trauma Centre. The baby is being taken care of by three women police personnel and the medical staff.

The women taking care of the baby include station house officer Somnath Paruthi and they are making sure that the baby is well attended to.

A case under Section 317 of the Indian Penal Code about abandonment of child under 12 years by parent has been filed. A senior police officer told Hindustan Times that the people who abandoned her clearly wanted her to die. The police station got a call around 1am that a baby has been found under the Munirka flyover packed in a plastic bag. When the police opened the bag, the baby still had her umbilical cord attached to her.

“The infant was shivering and breathing slowly. They rushed her to AIIMS Trauma centre. The SHO was informed and he too reached the hospital. He deployed three women staff in shifts to take care of the baby,” said the senior police officer, adding that the infant was recovering fast.

The police are now trying to trace the biological parents of the child. Joint commissioner, R P Upadhyay, was informed about the rescue operation after which he instructed additional DCP Nupur Prasad to monitor the health of the baby.
