Delhi Commission for Women chief Swati Malliwal has termed Delhi as the stalking capital of the world. Her comment came after a recent case of murder in which a girl was stabbed multiple times by her harasser in broad daylight. There were many people around where the incident took place but no one did anything to stop the murder from happening or call the police.

Malliwal said, “As if being the 'rape capital’ of the world was not enough, Delhi has also become the stalking capital of the world. It is really unfortunate,” reported Deccan Herald.

The incident of the girl getting stabbed was recorded in a CCTV camera in Burari. The girl’s family protested against the concerned police station’s inaction at the Burari Chowk a day after the incident.  The DCW chief has filed a complaint against the alleged police station.

“I met the mother and other family members of the girl. They have alleged that the girl had submitted a written complaint against the said accused at Burari police station in the first week of May,” the notice to Joint Commissioner of Police Sanjay Singh said.

"However, it is alleged that the police did not take any action against the culprit as the father of the man is a retired Delhi Police officer and he used his clout to prevent any action against his son. This inaction further emboldened the man to carry out the heinous act,” it added.

Malliwal has also blamed the Delhi police for treating stalking complaints lightly. "Women have often told us that the classic reaction they get from the police is, 'You weren’t raped now, were you?’ Stalking incidents often lead to heinous crimes like murder and rapes and thus need to be taken very seriously,” she told Deccan Herald.

Stalking cases are rampant in the capital. And rightly pointed out by Malliwal, they are taken frivolously by the police. The government has to make laws stricter to deal with stalking. We as citizens need to protest against it just like we did during the Nirbhaya case.
