Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was shoved in the shoulder by a man in Copenhagen's Kultorvet. The attacker, who attempted to flee, has been arrested. Frederiksen, who was "left shocked by the incident" arrived at Copenhagen Square when a man came from the opposite direction and harshly pushed her. News agency Agence France-Presse wrote that the Danish politician fell on her side but was not injured. The attacker attempted to escape but was arrested.
Who Was The Attacker?
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen's office told the agency AFP that she was "hit by a man Friday evening (June 7) on Kultorvet in Copenhagen. The man was subsequently arrested." Eyewitnesses shared their statements about the incident.
Two women who were seated at a fountain nearby told a local newspaper BT, "A tall and slim man came by in the opposite direction and gave her a hard shove on the shoulder, causing her to fall to the side." The witnesses added that it was a "strong push".
Another witness, Kasper Jorgensen, told newspaper Ekstra Bladet that he had seen the man after he was tackled to the ground, saying that one of what he presumed to be part of the security service had put a knee on the man’s back.
He said, “They had pacified him, and as he lay there, he looked confused and a little dazed." Mette Frederiksen was taken to a nearby cafe after the attack. While investigations are on, many political leaders have condemned the attack.
European Union chief Charles Michel expressed that he was "outraged by the assault”. Meanwhile, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola asserted, "Tonight's assault on the Danish PM is appalling. Violence has no place in politics."
