Cyclone Yaas: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a warning about another cyclone brewing in a low-pressure area over the east-central the Bay of Bengal around May 23.
“We have indicated in our bulletin that there is a likelihood of formation of a low-pressure area over Bay of Bengal next week," IMD said.
This comes after the Cyclone named Tauktae has already caused severe destructions in many states of India including Maharashtra and Gujrat.
Sunita Devi, in charge-cyclones at the IMD, told a leading daily that the department will mention the cyclone as soon as it comes in their forecast skill rang. She said, "In our outlook on cyclogenesis also we have indicated that the low-pressure system can intensify. As soon as it comes in our forecast skill range we will mention it in our forecasts.”
The Cyclone Yaas got its name from Oman. Sunita Devi added that the surface temperature of the sea is above normal by 1-2 degree celsius over the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea. She also added that the other oceanic and atmospheric conditions are in favour of cyclone development.
Cyclone Tauktae has killed over 13 people in Gujrat and caused destructions along the coastal regions. The damages included uprooted trees, electric poles and several destroyed houses and roads. Tauktae has been called the worst cyclone faced by the state. Heavy rains were triggered along the Saurashtra coast to North Gujarat, About 46 talukas in the state have been receiving rainfall over 100 mm. 12 of these 46 talukas have recorded downpour over 150mm to 175 mm.
The Cyclone has also reportedly caused three deaths and injured 10 people in Mumbai in the last 24 hours is passed the city coast.
