A recent data from Delhi Police has revealed a 17 percent rise in crimes against women in the first six and a half months of the year compared to the same period last year. On average, six cases of rapes were reported daily.
The data released by the Delhi Police revealed that there was an increase in crimes like rape, assault, and cruelty, committed against women in the capital.
Crimes Against Women In Delhi
From January 1 to July 15, 2021, Delhi recorded 6,747 cases of crimes against women and reported 1,033 rape cases. This year, the number of cases of crimes against women increased to 7,887 and reported rape cases increased to 1,100. On average, six cases of rapes are reported each day.
According to the data, cases of assault on women increased by almost 19 percent and instances of cruelty by husbands and in-laws rose by 29 percent as well.
In 2021, a total of 2,096 cases of cruelty by husbands and in-laws were reported and the number of cases increased to 2,704. 69 cases of dowry death were recorded as well.
The cases of assault on women with the intent to outrage their modesty have also increased from 1,244 cases to 1,480 cases since last year.
According to a senior police officer, awareness among women has increased due to police regularly sensitizing women in schools, colleges, and colonies. The officer said that women were not aware of the laws earlier, but have become coming forward to report the incidents happening against them.
Chhavi Methi, an activist with the Bhartiya Samajik Jagritik Sanghatan asked what was leading to the increase in crimes against women. Methi said, “We need to see what the reason is behind this. Are our men feeling insecure and why are they resorting to this?”
Methi further added that the increase in cases of crimes against women might be due to an increase in women reporting crimes committed against them. She said, “Maybe many women are coming forward to report such incidents. Methi added that it was good that women were speaking up and reporting crimes rather than cases going unreported.
