Crimes Against Women In 2022: Women's Commission Received 30,000 Complaints

According to the National Commission for Women (NCW) in India, the organisation received over thirty thousand complaints related to violence and crimes against women in 2022, which is the highest since 2014. As per the NCW, most of these complaints were related to emotional abuse and domestic violence.

Crimes against women in India have increased at a higher pace than ever before and the latest report by the National Commission for Women confirms the same. The NCW released a statement disclosing that it had women from across the country register complaints about the violence they faced in their respective households and environments.

According to the National Commission for Women (NCW) in India, the organisation received over thirty thousand complaints related to violence and crimes against women in 2022, which is the highest since 2014. As per the NCW, most of these complaints were related to emotional abuse and domestic violence.

Crimes Against Women In 2022

The data collected by PTI reveal that, in 2022 alone, NCW acquired around 31 thousand complaints of crimes against women across the country. Of the total 30,957 complaints, a maximum number of cases involved the right to live with dignity. A total of 9,710 complaints were subjected to women demanding a right to live with respect and dignity, all of which took into account the emotional abuse they had faced over the years. The next lot of complaints included those of domestic violence with a total of 6,970 cases.

Shockingly, complaints of dowry harassment grew in the country, with a total of 4,600 women coming forward to register their ordeal with the NCW. The overall complaints registered around violence against women totalled 30,864 in 2021.

Most complaints came from Uttar Pradesh

Of the total cases registered at NCW, a total of 16,872 (54.5 per cent) complaints arose from Uttar Pradesh. According to data, According to data, Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest number of gender-based violence in 2022. UP was followed by the capital as Delhi recorded 3,004 complaints. Maharashtra followed suit with 1,381 cases and complaints received from Bihar and Haryana 1,368 and 1,362 respectively.

The report states that most complaints from UP were subjected to women who were survivors of domestic violence and emotional abuse. 

Complaints received in 2022 highest since 2014

Comparing data to previous years, it revealed how complaints received in the past year were highest since 2014. The last reported highest number of complaints was in 2014 when the organisation received a total of 33,906 complaints.

Over 2500 complaints received were subjected to the offence of molestation. Over 1500 complaints were those of rape and attempt to rape, and over 1500 were related to police apathy against women. Nearly 1000 cases were those subjected to cyber crimes in the country. Let's talk about the past three years. Patterns show how it was during the pandemic when we saw a surge in gender-based violence and, according to reports, a lot of cases were registered even online during the lockdown, most of them being a result of domestic violence.
