COVID-19 Vaccination in India: India is planning on increasing its number of COVID-19 vaccination sites by five times after raising concerns over the speed of media coverage.
India is working to meet its target of vaccinating 300 million people by August this year. So far, the country has proven its mettle by becoming one of the fastest countries to vaccinate 4 million people. The target was reached after vaccinating over 300,000 front-line workers per day. However, 11 of 36 states or Union territories have yet to reach the halfway mark.
"These are not very unsatisfactory figures," Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan said. "We agree that like in any other field, there is a scope for improvement."
Vinod Kumar Paul, the man who is heading a government panel on the vaccine strategy said that they are running 10,000-11,000 immunisation sessions at present. "We will do four to five times of that when we start the next phase; wait for the pace to pick up, " he said.
COVID-19 vaccination for public over 50 years of age
India will commence it's COVID-19 vaccination program for the public from next month. However, people above the age of 50 will be vaccinated first.
The country has managed to inoculate over 60 per cent of its health-care workers which sums up to 10 million.
Besides this, India has also been nursing it's neighbouring countries by providing them with the COVID-19 vaccines. Over 17 million doses have already been shipped out.
