Pooja Kadian Clinches India's First Gold In Wushu World Championships

When top Indian women players are marking history in every sphere, here’s another star -- Pooja Kadian – who bagged India's maiden gold medal at the World Wushu Championships on Wednesday (Oct 4). Thus, she became the first Indian sportsperson -- male or female -- to ever bring home a gold medal from the competition.

The three-time World Championships silver medallist Pooja clinched gold in the 75 kg of the women's sanda competition and finished on top of the podium. Her rival was Russian Evgeniya Stepanova in the final but she was no match for Pooja.

Pooja had beat Heba Abdelkader of Egypt 2-0 to enter the semi-finals.

The 14th edition of the World Wushu Championships was held at Kazan, Russia. Pooja’s was the fifth medal of this edition which ended on Wednesday.

Pooja is well known as an ace Central Reserve Police Force's (CRPF) Wushu champion. In fact, her previous feats in Wushu and number of medals holds in both national and international events are note-worthy.

Pooja was a gold medallist in the 12th South Asian Games. She also she clinched silver in the World Games 2013, World Championship 2013 and World Championship 2015 respectively. Besides, she had also won gold medals in the National Games in 2014 and 2017.

She is currently employed as a head constable in the CRPF.

Alongside Pooja, four other members of the Indian contingent -- Ramesh Chandra Singh (48 kg sanda), Surya Bhanu Partap Singh (60 kg sanda), Rajinder Singh (90 kg sanda) and K. Arunpama Devi (65 kg sanda) have secured bronze medals.

Though Wushu is a ‘not so popular’ sport in India, Pooja’s achievement is remarkable. Congrats Pooja!
