In December 2022, television personality Jeremy Clarkson wrote a column in the Sun, a popular newspaper in the UK, that showed the extremes of vile commentary and ripped apart every shred of dignity there should have been in this particular case. Clarkson commented on Meghan Markle when she was already being rebuked in the country which she had left for good along with her husband, Prince Harry and their son.
The UK Press Body, Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO), has now slammed the column and Clarkson for breaching the Editors' Code of Practice by making derogatory comments about Markle which reeked of prejudice. The IPSO received over twenty-five thousand complaints from the public.
Column Calls For Meghan Markle To Be Paraded Naked
The opinion story was published in the Sun in December, in which Clarkson expressed his hatred for Meghan Markle. He crossed all boundaries when he stated that the Duchess should be made to parade naked on the streets of the UK. The British Press Body stated that the comments were sexist and should never have been made in the first place.
The IPSO Chairperson Edward Faulks mentioned that Clarkson made comments that were degrading towards the Duchess and that this should be a lesson going forward for the press not to indulge in such activities.
While both Clarkson and the Sun apologised for their commentary on Markle and her life, the IPSO was compelled to launch a formal investigation after women's charities WILDE Foundation and Fawcett Society registered their complaints. The column was condemned worldwide by official dignitaries, celebrities and the embers of the public.
In what could be called a vile rant of personal hatred, Clarkson had taken to the opinion story as a response to Markle and Prince Harry's documenatry Harry & Meghan, which was featured on Netflix. He stated that he "hated Markle on a cellular level and wanted that she should be paraded naked on the streets". He further went on to write that he also "dreams of people lumps of excrement at the Duchess". Clarkson also called Prince Harry a "puppet in the hands of his wife".
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have been at the receiving end of several British tabloids. The vile commentary on Markle has almost always crossed limits, and Clarkson's 2022 column certainly showed the prejudice and hatred against her.
Markle and Harry moved to California in 2020, leaving behind the royal life and privileges.
