Coimbatore district has got your back, working girls! It's soon to launch the first Adi Dravidar hostel exclusively for working women. Most likely to come up in the next few months, this hostel provides accommodation and amenities for at least 50 to 100 women -- and they say meals will be served for free.

Lack of safe accommodation was a mutual concern for both the Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department who recently proposed the idea of a hostel exclusively for working women near Hopes College. "Hardly 1% of tribal and SC girls from Thondamuthur and Kovai Courtallam area go to work in the city. Because, they don't fit in with the culture and often find it unsafe," said Ira Sashikala, a social worker, reported by TOI. "They hesitate to go even outside a 10km radius. Only now, Isha Foundation has admitted students in colleges like Kanya Gurukulam, Avinashilingam and Kongunadu Engineering College. So, once staying outside becomes a habit, the option of a free hostel will help," she added.

Any working woman can book the hostel services, without charges for any overheads or utilities like water or electricity. The Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department runs 38 hostels, of which 14 girls' hostels and 22 for boys. In total they accommodate around 2,200 students.
