A flash flood in Sikkim's Lachen Valley has left at least 23 Army personnel missing, as Army vehicles were submerged in the fast-rising waters of the Teesta River.
The incident, suspected to be triggered by a glacial lake outburst, has prompted a large-scale search and rescue operation in the affected region. Several buildings and structures were washed away downstream in North Sikkim's Chungthang, and a portion of NH-10 connecting Sikkim with West Bengal was also washed away.
Understanding Cloudbursts and Flash Floods
A cloudburst is characterised by sudden and heavy rainfall confined to a relatively small area. It is officially recognised when a region receives more than 100 mm of rain in about one hour. A flash flood, on the other hand, is the rapid flooding of a localised area, often triggered by factors such as heavy rain, cloudbursts, or dam breaks.
Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF)
A Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) occurs when a dam containing a glacial lake breaches, leading to a sudden release of water downstream. GLOFs are known for their destructive potential, and they can result from natural causes or human-induced factors.
Cloudburst In Sikkim Triggers Flash Flood
Sikkim has been experiencing heavy rainfall in recent days, contributing to the flash flood situation. The specific cause of the flash flood in Lachen Valley is believed to be related to a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) originating from Lhonak Lake. Coupled with heavy rainfall, a significant volume of water flowed into the Teesta River.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed deep concern over the situation in Sikkim and pledged assistance to the Sikkim government. She urged vigilance in North Bengal to prevent disasters and confirmed that measures for disaster management preparedness were being coordinated.
Deeply concerned on getting the news of 23 soldiers missing after a flash flood in Sikkim which followed a cloudburst in the region. While expressing solidarity and promise of assistance from our government side if sought on this matter, I also urge all concerned in North Bengal…

As the flood situation continues to develop in Sikkim, rescue and relief operations are ongoing, and authorities are closely monitoring the region, particularly with Sikkim still under a red alert due to heavy rainfall warnings.
The floods have not just caused destruction in the area but also affected nearby places. The force of the water has also wiped out a section of the road at the Teesta - National Highway at Melli, West Bengal.
