CJI Ramana on women representation: N.V. Ramana stated on September 4 that “very few women find representation at the top”. He said, "I must admit, with great difficulty, we have now achieved a mere 11% representation of women on the Bench of the Supreme Court," at an event organised by the Bar Council of India.

Ramana stated on Saturday that ideally, women should have had at least 50% representation at all levels considering it has been 75 years of Independence. However, only an unimpressive percentage of 11% has been achieved as of now on the bench of the Apex Court.

The Supreme Court has only four women judges as of now. This is the highest representation of women at the top, ever.

No Restrooms For Women In Lower Courts

The CJI also pointed out that even though some women lawyers manage to reach the top of the legal profession, basic amenities are lacking to serve them, such as the absence of restrooms in lower courts.

“Women do not have restrooms in the lower court," the CJI said, "It is difficult for them to wait for long hours in the court corridors,” Read the entire speech here.

SC Gets 3 New Women Judges

On August 31, as many as nine chief justices were appointed to the bench. Out of them, three were women, in a first. The appointment was historic as not only did it witness the highest number of women at the position but also allowed cameras and media intervention during the swearing-in ceremony for the first time.

The three newly appointed women judges include Justice Hima Kohli, Justice B.V. Nagarathna and Justice Bela M. Trivedi. Among them, Nagarathna is going to be the first woman Chief Justice of India in 2027.

Kohli on the other hand was appointed just two days before her retirement. She appeared in news and gained recognition for lashing out at the State for stopping the entry of COVID-19 patients from neighbouring States.

Trivedi, the first woman judge from Gujarat High Court to be elevated to the Supreme Court, appeared in news recently for slamming the Gujarat government for taking cover behind the facade that implementation of COVID-19 measures was tougher in a democracy. Read more about the women here.
