Lakhimpur case: The Supreme Court of India heard a petition filed in connection with the case of Lakhimpur Kheri violence, which resulted in the death of eight people, today. The mother of one of the deceased is reportedly in critical condition due to shock. Taking notice, the Chief Justice of India, NV Ramana has directed the UP government to provide all necessary medical care to her.
It is being alleged that Union Minister Ajay Mishra's son had allegedly mowed down eight farmers with his car at a protest in Lakhimpur Keri on October 3. Several videos of the incident have also surfaced online, sparking nationwide outrage. While earlier it was being reported that the SC bench of CJI Raman, Justices Hima Kohli and Surya Kant had taken a suo moto cognizance of the matter, a report by the Newslaundry says that it was a listing error.

The bench was infact hearing a Public Interest Litigation, filed on basis of a letter written by two lawyers from Uttar Pradesh, which had sought a CBI investigation in the matter. Two lawyers had written about the alleged murders of the farmers by Ashish Mishra in Lakhimpur Kheri. While Mishra's name is mentioned in the police complaint but even after four days, he is yet to be arrested.
The bench demanded to know who are the accused persons against whom the police have registered the FIR and whether they have been arrested or not, directing the UP government to file a status report.
According to the UP Police, they are still investigating the car crash and have registered a case against 13 people. The protestors, which include politicians of major opposition parties like All India Trinamool Congress, Congress, Samajwadi Party are demanding the resignation of the Union Minister. Though, Ajay Mishra in a meeting with Amit Shah refused to resign from his post.
The Minister claimed that his son was not in the car and that the incident was not deliberate. According to him, the driver had lost control as the farmers started pelting stones at the vehicle.
On October 4, the protest groups submitted a petition to the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, demanding a court-supervised investigation in the matter.
