Popular Chinese standup artist and comedian Li Dan is drawing flak for sharing what is being deemed a "vulgar" ad for women's underwear. As per reports, authorities in Beijing announced on Tuesday he would be fined approximately $134,350 for violating advertising laws in the country.
Earlier this year in February, Dan shared an ad for Ubras, an underwear brand based in Beijing, on Chinese social media and wrote something to the tune of how the product was "equipment" to help women win in workplaces by just lying down, according to tabloid Global Times.
Advertising and market regulation authorities in China have denounced the advertisement as "vulgar and insulting to women's dignity."
Comedian Li Dan Under Fire For 'Vulgar' Ad: What Netizens Are Saying
One of China's most popular artists credited with taking the country's comic scene international, Li Dan is the co-founder of Fun Factory, an establishment that organises cultural and talk shows, and is famous as the host of television series Rock & Roast.
For presenting women's underwear as a "lifejacket" at work, Dan faced massive backlash from fans and Chinese audiences after the ad was published in February. Chinese social media users widely panned it as 'offensive humour' that promoted sexism.
Following backlash, the underwear brand and Dan both issued apologies on Weibo, China's microblogging website. Dan admitted the ad was "indeed improper" and taking the blame wrote, "I will reflect on myself, thanks for all your criticism."
