History is in the making as women are taking over the forever male-dominated sport of golf. A young golfer has made everyone proud by winning the Women's PGA championship becoming the second woman from China to win a major title.
KPMG Women's PGA Championship is a women's professional golf tournament first initiated in 1955, giving opportunities to women to compete on an international level. KPMG Women's PGA Championship of 2023 was held at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, New Jersey. China's Ruoning Yin made victory by defeating Japan's Yuka Saso.
Ruoning Yin Wins Women's PGA Championship
Yin won with a birdie putt from about 10ft on the final hole defeating Yuka by a stroke. Yin closed in 4 under-67 to finish at 8 under-276. Japan's Saso is the US Women's Open Champion of 2021 and made a birdie on the par- 5 18th hole to move in for a tie for the lead. But Yin earned it with her fourth birdie after Saso missed her third 10-footer birdie attempt.
The 20-year-old Yin entered the game just two years ago, and this is the second time in the season that she is making a triumph of her name in the game. Earlier this year in April, Yin won LA Open claiming her first LPGA tour, joining China's now-retired player Shanshan Feng winning LPGA Championship in 2012 and becoming China's only major champion. Now Yin seconds her as the second woman from China to claim a major title.
Yin also commented on now-golf coach Feng, a major name in women in golf, calling her the goal she is chasing and saying, "She is the person who has inspired me the most."
Yin was just nine when Feng won the title of LPGA championship in 2012. Yin originally played basketball as her main sport, and Stephen Curry was her idol. But due to Yin's small stature, she turned to become a golfer.
Even after an hour of handing over the Women's PGA Championship trophy at Baltusrol, Yin described she was in awe, and the victory felt amazing and unreal. On winning by defeating Japan's saso, Yin said "I felt that I was going to make it."
SheThePeople is happy to see more women in golf, especially women as young as Ruoning Yin, and hopes this will encourage more women to take up the sport.
