China's population is decreasing is no hidden truth and it has been a cause of concern for China. On other hand, the elderly population is on par. So now the administration by implementing various measures is trying to increase the population. An appeal has been made to university students to donate sperm. Students are asked to help combat the country’s declining birth rate. The same campaign was trending on Twitter becoming the talk of the town. The sperm donation clinics across the country, including China’s capital Beijing and Shanghai, urged students to sperm donation.
China Asks Students To Donate Sperms
On February 2, Yunnan Human Sperm Bank in southwest China for the first time appealed to university students for sperm donation. During the appeal, they discussed types of benefits, conditions of registration, and subsidies. According to the report in Global Times, people are showing interest in this offer and students are discussing it. The year 2022 witnessed a massive decline in the population of China, also the first decline in six decades. China’s population for the first time in 61 years, decreased by 850,000 in 2022 as per the data of the National Bureau of Statistics of China (NBS).
According to Yunnan's sperm bank, donors need to be between the age bracket of 20 to 40 with a height over 165 cm, have no infectious or genetic diseases, and have a sound educational background. The student in written will be paid a little remuneration which can vary between 4,500 yuan ($664) to 7,000 yuan ($1000). The person eligible for donation after a health checkup has to make 8-12 donations. For now, Shanghai sperm bank offers the highest subsidy in Beijing.
China already scrapped its decades-long one-child policy in 2015 and allowed couples to have a third child in 2021. Although the desired effect despite government initiatives is yet to be derived.
