Chennai yoga teacher rape: A yoga instructor famously known as Yogaraj was arrested Wednesday in Chennai for allegedly raping a 22-year-old woman who was his student. As per reports quoting police, the accused touched the survivor inappropriately, recorded the alleged sexual assault and issued threats to leak the videos if she spoke up.
The All Women Police in Mambalam, which made the arrest, said the survivor alleged in her complaint that Yogaraj aka Poovendran Chidambaram raped her on multiple occasions this year. Indian Express reports there are also allegations of the 45-year-old instructor having more obscene videos of other women on his phone.
His electronic devices were reportedly seized and he was charged under sections of the Indian Penal Code and Information Technology Act. Reports claim Yogaraj has cases pending against him in Hong Kong as well.
Chennai Yoga Instructor Rape Case: Man Laced Student's Drink
The woman is a physiotherapist, as per The Hindu. She alleged in her complaint that Yogaraj invited her to his place in Kodambakkam on the pretext of a party. She accused him of lacing her drink with sedatives and raping her. Similar assaults and harassment allegedly continued through the year, with Yogaraj threatening to release videos that showed him raping her.
The blackmail was accompanied by Yogaraj attempting to pursue the woman romantically, she said. He allegedly proposed to her despite her warnings and wanted to marry her. The woman complained he even visited her place of work to put pressure.
In another shocking case of sexual assault of a woman in Chennai this year, a 20-year-old woman was reportedly gangraped in Kanchipuram in a moving car last month. The accused had lured her with a job offer and while on a drive, offered her a sedative-laced drink, which led her to lose consciousness. He and three others then raped her and dumped her on the road before fleeing. Accused were later arrested.
