Police have now booked the accused under the stringent Protection of Children from Sexual Offences(POCSO) Act. A women's court has sent him to jail.

The police said that the accused lives with his wife, two sons, and a daughter at Chengalpet. Police further said that the man had befriended the girl who is a student of Class 10 at a function. He then gave her a phone and the two used to talk to each other.

On December 14, the girl went out after informing her family that she was going to meet a friend. But when she did not return, members of her family filed a complaint with the police. During the initial investigation, it was found that the girl used to speak to some unknown number frequently.

Following the lead, police tracked her to a house in Thailavaram near Maraimalai Nagar. The girl was safely rescued and handed over to the family. The accused was also arrested from this place.

It was only 6 days ago that two minor girls were rescued after they went missing from the Roza area in Uttar Pradesh. One of the suspects got arrested last Saturday. Police had pressed charges under the POCSO Act against the accused. On December 12th, an 18-year-old man was arrested for kidnapping a 15-year-old girl in Delhi whom he befriended on Facebook. It is unfortunate that crimes against minors in India have increased over the past few years. According to a report released by NCRB on January 9, 2020, more than one lakh forty thousand crimes against children have been recorded in 2018, which means as many as 388 crimes were committed each day in the year.
