Chennai Couple ‘Out Of The Box’ Wedding Idea, Ties Knot Underwater

underwater wedding: Wedding day is a special one for any couple, and this duo from Chennai decided to make it even more memorable as the couple dived 60 feet underwater to tie the knot.

Chinnadurai from Tiruvannamalai and his fiance Shwetha from Coimbatore decided to have a unique wedding underwater, as the couple also wanted to raise awareness about waste accumulation in the sea and spread the message of keeping the waterbodies plastic-free.

While Chinnadurai, the groom is a swimming enthusiast from a young age, Shweta, the bride said that she was afraid of the thought of marrying underwater at first. “My in-laws convinced me for an underwater wedding. I took a few lessons of scuba diving and spent my time by the pool to become confident enough,” said Shweta.

The duo dived in their traditional outfits as the groom wore a veshti and the bride wore a saree. “We dived in the morning and exchanged garlands and tied the thaali before 7.30 am as per instructions from our priest," said Chinnadurai.

Their wedding was video recorded and the bride and the groom were cheered by their family members as they welcomed the two with the remaining wedding rituals. However, the couple said they did not invite many family and friends to their wedding function as the dates were not decided.

The couple has invited their guests to Sholinganallur, Chennai, where they will host their reception ceremony later this month.

S.B Aravind Tharunsri, master instructor, Professional Association of Diving Instructors in Australia, said that they had not even fixed the date for the wedding but instead waited for a calm day at the sea. “We got a call from the fisherman and he told us that the sea was calm, so we hurried early morning,” he said.

The couple had taken prior permission from the police for their underwater marriage.
