A head constable in Chennai has been suspended after allegedly harassing a woman and making inappropriate comments about her religious attire. The incident, which occurred on February 22nd, Thursday, has sparked outrage and calls for stricter action against discriminatory behaviour within the police force.
According to reports, the woman visited the Otteri police station to inquire about the status of her stolen vehicle. During her interaction with the head constable, identified as Velmurugan, he allegedly made lewd comments towards her and asked her to remove her burqa, claiming it hid her "beautiful face."
Chennai Policeman Suspended for Targeting Woman in Burqa
The woman named Fathima, understandably distressed by the encounter, reported the incident to senior police officials. Following an inquiry, Velmurugan was promptly suspended from duty.
The woman had lodged a theft report for her vehicle that went missing on February 14, and the case was registered based on the woman's complaint regarding her two-wheeler. The vehicle was recovered two days later, as it was spotted in Pudupet.
Following this, Fathima went to pick up her recovered vehicle when the head constable at the Velmurugan police station asked her to collect her scooter from the court. The distress caused the woman to break down frustrated by making rounds of the police station, which followed the inappropriate remark of the accused police officer as he said she looked beautiful even when she was crying and asked her to remove her burqa as it hid her "beautiful" face.
The swift action taken by the Chennai Police Department in suspending the head constable sends a positive message about their commitment to accountability and upholding professional standards. However, the incident also highlights the need for continued efforts to sensitise law enforcement personnel on cultural diversity and ensure respectful behaviour towards individuals from all backgrounds.
This incident is a grim reminder of the importance of respecting individual choices and religious attire. The burqa is a personal expression of faith for many women, and it should not be subjected to judgment or discriminatory remarks.
