A new development in the Manipur viral video case, the Centre has requested the Supreme Court to transfer the trial out of the State of Manipur to any other State. It also told the Court that the investigation into the incident of violence towards two women in Manipur has been transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), as per a report.
In a recent affidavit, the Centre has requested the Supreme Court to transfer the trial to any other State and to do so steps have been taken with the consent of the State Government of Manipur.
CBI To Probe Manipur Video
The court criticised the government in strong words and said if the Centre couldn't take action, Court will. However, the Centre maintained its stance- "zero tolerance towards crimes against women"; sought that the trial should be conducted in a time-bound manner within six months of filing the chargesheet.
The affidavit was filed by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla said the Ministry is constantly monitoring the case since the video surfaced online. The affidavit also includes a few remedial measures taken to support the survivors.
As per the Live Law report, the affidavit says Legal aid has been provided to the victim by the district legal service authority. The state government has formulated rehabilitative measures, including counselling from a trained professional. Also provided with a safe and secured shelter, arrangements for education, assistance with livelihood, and provisions for vocational training and employment.
It has been three months that Manipur is witnessing ongoing ethnic community conflict. In response, the government has deployed additional companies of CRPF and Army/Assam Rifles in Manipur along with local police.
On 19 July, a video from Manipur, in which two women being paraded naked and subjected to sexual brutality went viral. Supreme Court had taken suo motu cognizance of the grievous incident. CJI DY Chandrachud observed, "We will give a little time for the government to take action, otherwise we will step in."
