Indrani Mukerjea Gets CBI Pardon in INX Case After Turning Approver

The INX Media case is an on-going high profile money laundering case, which involves an allegation of irregularities in foreign exchange clearances given to the INX Media group for receiving overseas investment in 2007.

The CBI on Friday filed a charge sheet against P Chidambaran, senior Congress politician, his son Karti Chidambaran and others for the INX Media case. The names in the list also include INX Co-Founder Peter Mukerjea and Indrani Mukerjea. Indrani Mukerjea, however, will not be tried. The charge sheet that was filed before a special court in Delhi today, lists her as an accused who “turned approver and pardoned.”

It has been alleged by the investigators that Indrani Mukerjea and her husband met Chidambaran in order to ensure that there is no delay in their application. Chidambaran, however, has denied meeting Indrani and has also negated any wrongdoing in the case.

Currently In Mumbai's Byculla Jail

Indrani Mukerjea is currently in Mumbai's Byculla Jail, awaiting trial for the murder of her daughter Sheena Bora. She, along with her husband, co-founded the INX Media and allegedly received foreign investment clearances by bribing the then financeministerP Chidambaran. It has been alleged by the investigators that Indrani Mukerjea and her husband met Chidambaran in order to ensure that there is no delay in their application. Chidambaran, however, has denied meeting Indrani and has also negated any wrongdoing in the case.

He was arrested by the CBI on August 21 and is in the judicial custody in Tihar Jail since September 5.

Indrani Mukerjea Turned “Approver And Pardoned”

Indrani Mukerjea was arrested in 2015 for the murder of her 25-year-old daughter Sheena Bora. However, in July 2019, she turned an approver in the INX Media case.  A Delhi Court allowed Mukerjeato turn approver after CBI promoted her application that was earlier filed by Mukerjea. Speculations were that she has been in the know of pieces of evidence, which can help the CBI in probing the case. These pieces of evidence are in the form of conversation that happened in front of Mukerjea.

Indrani Mukerjea has claimed to pay $5 Million as a bribe to the Chidambarans. Basically, The case entailsthat Karti Chidambaram allegedly managed to secure clearance from the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) for INX Media to get 305 crores in overseas funds when they only had clearance for four crores during the term of P Chidambaram being the finance minister.

In the charge sheet filed today, the CBI has also added allegations of forgery, which weren't in the first place in the First Information Report it filed on May 15, 2017.
