A British woman of Pakistan origin Mayra Zulfiqar was shot dead in Pakistan after she reportedly rejected two men’s marriage proposals.
Mayra Zulfiqar's uncle Mohammad Nazeer said that after turning both men down, she was warned of “dire consequences”. The police have launched a manhunt for the two men after the 24-year-old was shot dead.
Sidra Khan from the Punjab Police referred to an initial post-mortem report and told local media that Mayra Zulfiqar had been shot and bled to death. The superintendent told the newspaper Dawn that Zulfiqar had a gunshot wound on her neck and another one on her arm. Bruises were found on her right hand and left foot.
Zulfiqar's uncle Nazeer, a Lahore resident had found the body after he received a phone call from her father in London to say she had been killed. Nazeer said that Zulfiqar told him she was involved in a dispute with two male friends after she rejected their marriage proposals. Zulfiqar told him that she had been threatened with “dire consequences”.
According to Sayyed Ali, an operations superintendent at Punjab Police, an unidentified caller alerted the police force about the murder. Zulfiqar was found dead in her room with her phone near her body.
Mayra Zulfiqar moved from the UK to Pakistan two months prior to her death. She initially went to Pakistan for a wedding and was residing at a rented home with a friend.
Zulfiqar was found dead after four men, including the two main suspects, were believed to have broken into her flat on May 3. The police detained two Pakistani men for questioning to determine whether they were involved in the murder.
The UK Foreign Office said that they were supporting the family of the British woman that died in Pakistan. The department said that it sought more information from the local authorities.
