Boxing Coach Sandeep Malik Arrested on Charges of Sexual Assault

A 19-year-old boxer, a member of the Haryana Boxing Team, has lodged a sexual assault complaint against her coach. During a trip to Kolkata to participate in the Classic Boxing Championship, '3rd Bengal Boxing Classic 2020' the coach Sandeep Malik allegedly misbehaved with her while on the tour, as per reports. She had filed a complaint with the New Delhi Railway Station Police Station after returning from the tournament in West Bengal.

As per the complaint, the team was travelling from Delhi to Kolkata on February 27 by the Duronto Express and Malik reportedly assaulted the boxer while on the journey, he continued to misbehave throughout the championship.

On March 13, when the team returned to Delhi, she reported the incident and the police arrested Malik from Sonipat on Monday. He has been booked under Sections 354-A (teasing) and 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). "The coach was arrested from Sonipat in Haryana and during interrogation, he confessed to sexually assaulting the woman boxer. He runs a boxing academy at Sonipat and has represented India in boxing tournaments," said a senior police official.

Sandeep lives in the Lalhedi Kalan and runs a boxing academy named Sandeep Malik Boxing Club. The 28-year-old coach is married and has two children. Being a national boxer, he has represented the country on many occasions. The girl is one among dozens of his students in the academy he runs in Delhi.

The teenager has been medically examined after her statement was recorded in front of the magistrate. The DCP said that they will probe if Sandeep Malik had abused his other students too. “We did not immediately contact the other women in his academy, lest he gets alerted and escapes. We’ll probe if he is a habitual offender,” said the DCP, The Hindustan Times quoted.
