BJP's Somya Gurjar Elected As First Mayor Of Jaipur Greater Municipal Corporation

Somya Gurjar is a BJP candidate and a former member of the women's commission. She defeated Divya Singh by 44 votes.

Somya Gurjar the first mayor of Jaipur Greater

BJP candidate Somya Gurjar has been elected as the mayor of the Jaipur Greater Municipal Corporation (GMC) recently. She defeated 28-year-old Oxford returned Divya Singh of Congress by a tail-wind of 44 votes. Gurjar got 97 votes in her favour while Singh received 53 votes.

The mayoral elections in Jaipur were conducted on Tuesday. The voting began at 10 am and lasted till 2 pm after which the counting process started. The results were declared later in the evening.

Gurjar has scripted history by becoming the first mayor of newly formed Jaipur Greater. "Our aim will be to have transparent functioning at the municipal corporation, Efforts will be made to strengthen health, sanitation, and security (swasthya, suraksha, swacchta) in the city," Somya told The Times of India.

Jaipur Greater Municipal Corporation and Jaipur Heritage Municipal Corporation are newly formed and both the municipal corporations have got women as first mayors. Munesh Gurjar of Congress has been elected as the new mayor of Jaipur Municipal Corporation. Munesh received 56 out of 100 votes and defeated BJP's Kusum Yadav who received 44 votes.

Who is Somya Gurjar?

Somya Gurjar is a BJP candidate and was a former member of the women's commission. In 2016, she got ensnared in a controversy after she clicked a selfie with a rape survivor. She was forced to resign from her post after that. RSS handpicked Gurjar for the mayoral elections. This decision was attacked by Congress Chief whip Mahesh Joshi, he said, "BJP is making a joke of the people’s mandate by appointing Gurjar. A woman who does not have wisdom where to click pictures has been picked by the party to head the corporation."
